Frequently Asked Questions

What is EDUC8EU? Academic advising plays a crucial role in the cohesive retention strategies of the INVEST alliance. To enhance the provision of sustained and personalized guidance to students, we are adopting the EDUC8EU integrated platform. This platform will streamline advising services by offering informed recommendations that closely emulate the role of an academic advisor. The EDUC8EU software framework supports the entire academic advising lifecycle. It is a versatile toolkit designed to meet diverse business and educational needs across all three academic levels—bachelor's, master's, and doctoral—as well as support extracurricular educational activities such as living labs and Winter/Summer schools. By assisting students at critical decision points and in exceptional situations that necessitate academic plan adjustments, the platform increases the flexibility of educational processes, thereby enhancing student support and guidance.
How is the reasoning process performed? The EDUC8EU software platform offers a "tight integration" of ontological, fuzzy reasoning and AI-based tools all together. The system comprises a fuzzy logic component that determines the student's interest degree for a specific academic choice accompanied by an ontological model and an AI-based subsystem for the recommendation of personalized learning pathways.
What leverage ontologies bring to modeling academic advising processes? An initial version of the ontology is created and inputted into the system. The ontology contains a set of knowledge streams to be utilized for a) the academic advising guidelines formalization, and b) the recycling of knowledge through the dynamic generation of facts by the rule engine. Over time, the system will enhance the knowledge base by discovering new chunks of knowledge, which are stored inside the ontology, thus ensuring the continuing evolution of the rule-base and EDUC8EU infrastructure.
Which factors are included in the EDUC8EU learner model? According to our research, the learner model of the EDUC8EU system consists of the following main parameters:
a) Past Performance,
b) Perceived Difficulty of Learning Pathway,
c) Perceived Career Opportunities,
d) Friends & Peers in Learning Pathway,
e) Reputation of Learning pathway,
f) Cost of learning pathway, and
g) Personality.
These parameters in the EDUC8EU learner model constitute fuzzy linguistic variables that are dynamic estimators of student's interest for a specific learning pathway.
Which theory is used in the profile assessment component? The profile assessment component is based on RIASEC. The RIASEC model (aka the "Holland Codes") is a type theory of personality which was introduced by American psychologist Dr. John Holland. By comparison to other personality models, the RIASEC model is particularly well-suited to helping individuals choose a career - in fact, that's exactly what it was designed to do.
The profile assessment test is a speedy and simple test to take. It is comprised of 60 questions and takes less than five minutes to complete. You will be asked to mark how much certain activities would interest you - you must quite simply think about whether or not you would enjoy doing such an activity. Taking the profile assessment test will provide EDUC8EU with important information about your personality.
In which formats the EDUC8EU result can be exported? The final report can be exported in pdf format. We do not store your personal details or results in our database.
Can EDUC8EU be faked? Since EDUC8EU is used for self-reporting purposes the student has less vested interest in 'lying'. However, if a student is distracted, not feeling well, can't see the benefit or simply is not interested, then this will affect the result. In any case, the student has nothing to gain by manipulating the result.

EDUC8EU should be considered as a tool rather than an exam with a result that's directive, thus its reliability doesn't have to matter as much. EDUC8EU offers a springboard from which to start the self-exploration process on what is suitable or interesting, why it is suitable or interesting and to unpick the result in relation to what you feel is the right thing to do.
